Some newish BEFORE and AFTERS

I haven’t posted any B&A photos for a while, so here are a few so you can see what else I’ve been up to!004 SOLD 009 (600x800)
I loved this little table, and it was the first thing I sold that day.  Perfect for a small plant, or book, or cup of tea.

This beautiful table came from a hoarder’s house!

008 (800x600) SOLD 017 (800x600)
This was a great child’s desk.  I decided it also needed to be a chalkboard.  It was a hybrid of two of the things I loved most when I was little–my big chalkboard, and my red desk!

This also came from the hoarder’s house.  My friend Gus insisted I take this frame.  It’s c. 1870s frame for a mirror that would have set on a dresser.  I didn’t want it, I didn’t know what to do with it, but he convinced me.  I have picture frames dangling from ribbons but I don’t know that I love it.  I think I’m going to try putting in a cork board instead.

007 (600x800)  SOLD 004 (600x800)
There’s a saying “never say never” and it applies here!  This dresser is something I bought at Target several years ago.  It’s one of they cheap laminate pieces that aren’t meant to last.  But recently I found another dresser I wanted to keep so I need to get rid of this one.  I swore I wouldn’t work with anything made of particle board or laminate.  Well, guess what.  I decided it was in good condition so why not.  What I discovered is that you can’t sand it, and you can’t paint it!  So now what?  How about decoupage?  That worked!    I took it to the market and just asked for someone to make an offer.  A guy came up and wanted it and offered $35.  SOLD!  Yes, a guy.  I was a bit surprised because this is sorta girlie, but who am I to judge?

So those are just a few recent pieces.  I’ll more in a few days!

Still flipping furniture, but also bottles!

As you know, I’ve been trying to add some things to my booth at the flea market; things other than furniture.  Here’s a an example:  While shopping at the flea market, you might ask yourself “I wonder what time it is.”  Well, I can help you!

003 (800x600)
It’s clearly time to Cha Cha, or to see sing the Best of Sonny and Cher!

Or if you’re at home and want some cool, romantic lighting, or if during a storm your lights go out…. I can help you!

Check out my bottle flipping; turning wine bottles into lanterns!

Making these required A LOT of hard work!!

A New Toy

I’m starting to venture into different things for the flea market.  One of the people who runs it suggested adding a few things to be more enticing, so that’s what I’m trying to do.

002 (800x600)

I’ve added letters that are painted and decoupaged, people seem to like them!

I’m not going to be selling misc. flea market finds, but my intention is to continue with the flip idea, which means more recycling objects and items.  That being said here’s my new toy!

Yes, I know, it IS scarey looking!  It’s a bottle cutter, so hopefully in the next month or so you’ll see some new items!  Stay tuned to see what I come up with!

I’m tired.

Tonight I find myself having second thoughts about this “hobby” of mine.  Yes, I need the creative outlet and yes, I enjoy the hunt.  But most of all I love the challenge of bringing new life to something that was thrown away, is unwanted, unloved and no longer beautiful.  There is a great satisfaction in turning something around and makeing it wanted.  I know, it’s pretty obvious that there’s something subliminal going on here.

Frankly, I’m tired.  It’s hard non-stop work.  One of my two days off (Sunday) is flea market day so that means I come home from work on Saturday, pick up the rental van, and load it up.  Sunday morning I go to the market, unload, sell (hopefully) load the remainders back up, come home, unload the van and take it back to the rental place.  My “day off” is by far the hardest and longest work day of the week.  It’s constant search and work.  But it’s not just that.  Sometimes I just get tired of doing everything by myself.  Let’s face it, I’m of a certain age,and never married so I’m used to taking care of and doing  everything by myself, but sometimes I’m tired of it.

The other thing is I miss my apartment looking nice.  I work out of what used to be my guest room, and my dining room and hallway are overflowing with furniture to be flipped or sold.  Misc. pieces are scattered in the living room and by the kitchen. I’m not a neat freak, but I am tired of having to walk through a maze of furniture, paint, and misc. things every day.  I’m tired of feeling like a hoarder.  I’m tired of my apartment looking like a hoarder lives here.

So I’m not sure I’ll keep the flipping up after this summer season.   When I started flipping furniture and the blog, I said it was about re-purposing furniture while reinventing myself.  I have made some discoveries about myself over the last year.  But I don’t know that I have the mental energy to keep it going.   Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to talk it out and whine a bit.

Okay, enough of that!  I know you’re really here to see what I’ve been up to, so….  Here a few cute pieces that will be for sale tomorrow at the Somerville Flea!

This cutie was inspired by my friend Kelly who not only loves everything beachy, but her son is in the navy.

#16 – Chair Caning

So just to clarify what this is, some of you know I have another blog 50for50years, where I’ve challenged myself to try 50 new things this year.  #16 happened to be learning to re-cane chairs!  It relates to this blog as well, so here it is!

50 for 50

Publicity photo for the production of "Grease". This was such a fun night in the parking lot of the Olmos Pharmacy with the local car club. Yes, I played the obnoxious cheerleader Patty Simcox!

I was 16 and this was a publicity photo for the production of “Grease”. This was such a fun night in the parking lot of the Olmos Pharmacy with the local car club. Yes, I played the obnoxious cheerleader Patty Simcox!  No surprise there!

Many of you know that I have another blog where I talk about and show the pieces of furniture that I flip and sell at a flea market or to friends.  It’s a hobby I started last summer to have some sort of creative outlet, but it grew and I knew I needed to start selling all those cute little pieces of unloved furniture that I was picking up.  I don’t pretend to be highly skilled, a carpenter or furniture repair expert. If minor repairs are needed I can often do that, but mostly I just refinish and paint them so that they can have…

Somerville Flea Market 2014

Hi kids!   June 1 was opening day of the Somerville Flea Market and it was a great day!!  Perfect weather, lots of people and lots of sales!  Yippee!  Of course the only bad thing about that is the rapid flips I need to do now.  I was out of town this past week so tonight I’ve been frantically trying to finish up some pieces so I won’t have a sad looking stall on Sunday.  Pre-market Friday nights are stressful.  It doesn’t help when Mia the Purfect, jumps on a table I’ve just put a layer of protective coating!  Poor baby.  I should have known.  It’s the table she loves to get up on to watch me.

So here are a few photos from the first market day.  Most pieces sold!

My perspective.

And some of the pieces I’ll never see again.  😦    before and afters.

It is sort of sad to let go of a piece that I’ve worked so hard on, and become attached to in some way.  But I also think it’s a good practice of learning to let go of things.  I’m a very sentimental person and I do become attached to things.  Knowing that the people who buy these pieces love them, makes me happy.   Knowing that I’ve given an other wise unloved, beat up, thrown away piece of furniture a new life is great!!  It makes me proud.

Holiday weekend??

Holiday weekend?  What’s that?  I spent most of my weekend working mixed with a little bit of play.  I started a new job last week (Tues.- Sat. schedule) but I did go to Maine Saturday for an overnight trip.  It was good to get away, but it wasn’t enough time to really relax.  I headed back Sunday morning and had a productive day which included stopping by a fabulous flea market where I picked up a couple of good items to flip.

013 (800x600)       020 (800x600)

Here a couple of before pictures. The two chairs are actually 2 of 4.  They’re folding chairs, what a find!

Then the rest of Sunday was running errands, getting materials and flipping.  Monday was flip flip flip!!   Luckily it was a beautiful day yesterday so I took advantage of the outside space.  As you may know I have limited space in my apartment, so anytime I can work outside is great!!  I’m thankful for my neighbors who don’t mind!

017 (800x600)

The countdown is on!  My first flea market for the season is Sunday!  So much to do, so little time!

Another happy customer!!

My friend Christian said he needed some sort of stand to put his computer monitor on so he didn’t have to lean over and break his back.  He said “You don’t happen to have anything that might work do you?”  Well, guess what?  I DID!  I just happened to have something sitting around because I found it and thought someday I might find a use for it.  I know, I know, that’ what hoarders say, but in this case it was legit!

003 (1024x768)

This is the random piece I just happened to have around.  It was probably a stool in an earlier life.

If you’ve followed this blog you know that I say I wait for the pieces to talk to me, to tell me what they want to be.  This one didn’t speak very loudly.  Plus I was dealing with the pressure of basically making something with free reign.  It sounds good, but it’s scarey when you’re making something for a friend/client/customer and you don’t know exactly what they want, and maybe they don’t either.  I was able to get a color preference out of him, so that helped!

017 (1024x768) 020 (1024x768)

I ended up quiet happy with it, even though it took me a while to figure what to do with it.  I think Christian is happy with it.  At least he said he was!!
